In October 2018, The Wiener Library launched an online effort to identify unknown photographic subjects in our Gerty Simon Collection. Since then we are delighted to have been contacted by people all over the world who have made suggestions as to who these sitters could be. So far, we have positively identified a number of people, including the following:
Ella af Wirsen (1903-1991) and her daughter Ulla af Wirsen (1922-1976), wife and daughter of Sweden’s envoy to Germany Einer af Wirsen Kolja Wassilieff, Russian painter Elfrieda Thum (1886-1952), also known as Erich Thum; German artist Alexander Iolas (1907-1987), Greek/American art collector, dancer, gallerist
We would like to thank everyone who has got in touch so far to help us with our #FindingGerty campaign. Now we are launching the second batch of images of people we are still working to identify. Visit our Flickr page to see if you recognise any of the new faces in our line up of unidentified sitters.
