Hybrid Book Launch – The Last Transport: The Holocaust in the Eastern Aegean

The Wiener Holocaust Library is delighted to host a special evening book launch event for Prof Anthony McElligot’s new book, The Last Transport: The Holocaust in the Eastern Aegean. The event will be chaired by Sir Richard J Evans, will include a short musical performance by Francesca Ter-Berg, and a panel discussion with Dr Paris Chronakis and Dr Bea Lewkowicz.

Hybrid Event: Sex, Violence and Speech in the Holocaust: The Case of Yiddish, Hannah Pollin-Galay with Zoe Waxman

This lecture will explore new Holocaust-era Yiddish words for sex and sexual violence, uncovering stories of both desire and abuse. These terms illuminate the importance of new historical realities such as sex barter and loss of libido, as well as long-standing ideas about the Jewish female body.

Virtual Event: The Forgotten and the Despised in the Concentration Camps: New Work on “Criminal” Victims, Andreas Kranebitter in conversation with Anna Hájková

As part of its new academic books series, the Wiener Holocaust Library is delighted to host Dr Andreas Kranebitter, who will speak about the topic of his new book, The Construction of Criminals: The Imprisonment of “Professional Criminals” in the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Dr Kranebitter, whose book is currently published in German and in preparation in English, will discuss his findings with Prof Anna Hájková in this special virtual event.

In this lecture from the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism, Professor Wolf Gruner will speak about his latest publication, Resisters: How Ordinary Jews Fought Persecution in Hitler’s Germany.

Hybrid Lunchtime Talk: Anna Nyburg, The Clothes on Our Backs: How refugees from Nazism revitalised the British fashion trade

Jews had long been active in the clothing trade in Europe, developing new production and retail methods and excelling as designers. However, in the UK clothes production was mostly conservative and design was not a concept. What happened to these Jews in the clothing industry after the Nazis came to power in 1933, bent on ridding Germany of Jews? Many found asylum in Britain, where soon the refugee owners of Kangol and other firms were employing thousands of British workers at a time of dreadfully high unemployment.

Virtual Lecture: 2022 Ernst Fraenkel Prize Winner – Ari Joskowicz, Rain of Ash

The Wiener Holocaust Library is delighted to host an evening lecture by the winner of our 2022 Ernst Fraenkel Prize. The jury has awarded Ari Joskowicz’s book, Rain of Ash: Roma, Jews, and the Holocaust the prize. The judges found it to be “a compelling and important book which deserves to be widely read. It is both beautifully written and sensitively handled. A truly field defining work!”
