Public lecture and musical performance: Revealing suppressed culture – Lost histories in the archives of The Wiener Holocaust Library

An event hosted with the Reawakening Suppressed Music project. Dr Barbara Warnock will explore some of the traces and records of culture suppressed during the Nazi era that are contained in the Library’s extensive archives. Conductor Shelley Katz joined by soprano Adaya Peled will present orchestral works by Johanna Bordewijk-Roepman, Robert (Bob) Hanf, Robert Kahn and Hans Krieg.

Black History Month Talk: The Persecution of the Black Community in Nazi Germany, with Lambeth Archives

This is an event hosted for Black History Month at Lambeth Archives. Led by the Library’s Digital Engagement and Community Outreach Officer Yasmin Gledhill, the talk will include an exploration of the story of Ronald Roberts, who was born in Wiesbaden to a white German mother and a British/Barbadian father. The talk will draw on the memoir that Ronnie dictated towards the end of his life, as well as documents and photographs in the Library’s collections.

Proximities: Space, Memory, and Perpetrator Perception in “Final Account: Third Reich Testimonies”

In his presentation Zoltán Kékesi talks about his work with the collection and focuses on the interplay between space, perception, and memory. While we know so much about the characteristic spaces of the Third Reich, imagined and constructed, such as the expansionist notion of Lebensraum, the examples of Nazi architecture, or the design of the concentration camps, there has been less attention on how these spatialities were experienced, perceived, and remembered by ordinary Germans.

Their Finest Hour ‘Digital Collection Day’: A nationwide campaign to preserve Second World War and Nazi-era memories and artefacts

The Wiener Holocaust Library is looking for people to bring their stories and artefacts relating to the Second World War, the Nazi era and/or the Holocaust to a ‘Digital Collection Day’ on Friday 10 November (10am - 3pm). The event is part of a nationwide campaign organised by Their Finest Hour, a team based at the University of Oxford and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which is collecting and preserving the everyday stories and objects of the Second World War.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Library's predecessor organisation in Amsterdam, we are kicking off a year of events and activities with the launch of two very short films, commissioned to mark this important year for the Wiener Library, the longest continuously running archive of documents on the Nazi era and the Holocaust in the world.

Hybrid Exhibition talk: Kristallnacht in Vienna: The Radicalisation of Antisemitic Policy in the Nazi State

In this talk, Dr Toby Simpson will discuss the reasons behind the extreme brutality of Kristallnacht in Vienna. Compared to other locations in the Third Reich, even in other cities where local antisemitism was rife, the brutal nature and long-term impact of anti-Jewish violence in the Austrian capital is striking. This talk will examine collections held at The Wiener Holocaust Library and consider what insights the study of this terrible historical event might offer people today.

This talk takes a fresh look at a sample of 'Jewish' photos, asks how we can interpret them, and explores ways in which they might reveal aspects of Jewish experiences on which other sources remain silent.
