SUMMARY:Virtual Student and Teacher Talk: Correspondence between Separated Families during the Nazi Era and the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Red Cross telegram from Alice Redlich to her family in Berlin\, 17th April 1942. \nLetters were sent by post. Urgent messages arrived via telegram. When the postal routes were blocked during the war\, the Red Cross delivered messages. In the ghettos\, the Jewish councils were tasked with the organisation of the postal service and the ghetto post office. Jewish prisoners in concentration sometimes sent messages via Gestapo-controlled association. \nUsing The Wiener Holocaust Library’s unique archival material on correspondence to discuss the mechanics of communication between separated families during the Nazi era and the Holocaust\, Dr Christine Schmidt (Deputy Director and Head of Research) and Dr Barbara Warnock (Senior Curator and Head of Education) will explore how letters allowed separated family members to maintain connections and exchange information about the Holocaust. \nThis session is suitable for those teaching or studying the following: \n\nKS3 History\nGCSE History Edexcel: Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-1939\nGCSE History OCR: Germany 1925-1955\, The People and The State\nEdexcel A-Level History: Germany and West Germany\, 1918–89\nOCR History: Democracy and Dictatorships in Germany 1919–1963\nAQA History: Democracy and Nazism\, Germany 1918-1945\n\nThis event is organised as part of the Holocaust Letters exhibition events series.

SUMMARY:Virtual Student Workshop: Forgotten Victims: The Nazi Genocide of the Roma and Sinti
DESCRIPTION:Margarete Kraus\, a Czech Roma who was sent to Auschwitz. Wiener Holocaust Library Collections. \nOn 16 December 1942\, a decree was issued by Himmler to move all Sinti and Roma in Reich Territory to Auschwitz\, where a special camp had been built to hold them. Following the order\, more than 22\,000 Roma (most of the remaining Roma in Germany) were rounded up and sent. Just a few survived. \nThis workshop marks 80 years since that decree and yet little is known about the genocide carried out against the Roma and Sinti communities of Europe by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Second World War.  Referred to as ‘the forgotten Holocaust’ by Professor Eve Rosenhaft\, this workshop draws upon The Wiener Holocaust Library’s collections of material on the genocide to uncover the story of this understudied aspect of Nazi persecution. \nWorkshop Aims:  \n\nTo find out who the Roma are\nTo gain an overview of Roma history in Europe\nTo consider Nazi policies towards Roma\n\nEvent guidelines for those joining online:\n1. SUMMARY:Virtual PhD and a Cup of Tea: Does Holocaust Education Influence Gen Z’s Likelihood to Act Against Hate?
DESCRIPTION:Around the globe\, references to the Holocaust have been used to challenge policy decisions (Bergen 2021)\, to describe animal rights abuses (Szyubel 2006; Sobel 2018)\, and to justify war. \nIt is in part a lack of understanding about the Holocaust that allows this historical mass atrocity to be distorted and leveraged for political purposes such as these. At the same time\, across Canada and in the majority of U.S. states\, genocide education is not yet a curricular requirement\, resulting in students learning about the Holocaust at disproportionate rates and through nontraditional sources\, such as on social media platforms and television shows. \nUsing data from a new pre-/post-treatment survey of ~3600 North American teenagers\, Dr Lerner argues that mandated Holocaust education interventions not only increase factual knowledge and decrease Holocaust denial in general\, but that they also correspond with an increased likelihood that students will take necessary action to protect minority communities when confronted with hatred or intolerance. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Lerner is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the United States Naval Academy. Her research is on the intersection of authoritarianism and dissent\, with a regional focus on Russia and the post-Soviet region\, and she is also a scholar of the Holocaust. Her work has been published by Comparative Political Studies (2019)\, Holocaust Studies (2021) and the Routledge Handbook of Religion\, Mass Atrocity\, and Genocide (2022). Dr. Lerner is currently completing her book manuscript\, entitled Post-Soviet Graffiti: Free Speech in the Streets (under advance contract with University of Toronto Press)\, which demonstrates that street art is a viable tool for political communication\, and effective in circumventing autocratic censorship. She conducted the research for this draft paper in 2021 as a Presidential Data Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Western Ontario (Canada)\,

SUMMARY:Virtual Student Revision: Democracy and Nazism: The Racial State

Wiener Holocaust Library Collections. \nPart of the Library’s Summer Term educational talks and workshops. \nIn the interwar period\, Germany was politically unstable. The trauma caused by the First World War and the Great Depression left many Germans disheartened and susceptible to extremist ideas. \nThe Nazi Party seemingly offered hope and solutions. The Party condemned the unpopular Treaty of Versailles and offered an explanation for Germany’s problems – the Jews. Although this was not a new idea in Germany\, where antisemitism had been growing since the start of the century\, Nazi ideology placed antisemitism and racist ideas at its centre. \nThis revision session\, aimed at GCSE and A-Level students\, will utilise sources from the Library’s unique archive to examine the Nazi’s creation of a ‘Racial State’. Wiener Holocaust Library Collections. \nPart of the Library’s Spring Term educational talks and workshops. \nIn this talk\, part of the Library’s event series for its Fighting Antisemitism exhibition\, Senior Curator Dr Barbara Warnock will explore the development of antisemitism in Western Europe from the late nineteenth century to today\, and the means by which Jewish organisations and other groups have fought back against antisemitism. The talk will draw upon The Wiener Holocaust Library’s collections of material on antisemitism in Weimar and Nazi Germany\, British fascism in the 1930s and beyond\, and the struggle against fascism and antisemitism. The talk will cover the efforts of The Wiener Holocaust Library’s predecessor organisation in Germany\, as well as those of other organisations\, such as the 43 Group\, formed by primarily of Jewish ex-servicemen and women after the Second World War to fight back against the resurgence of fascism in Britain\, and look at the work in this area of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Community Security Trust. \nDelivered by Dr Barbara Warnock\, Senior Curator and Head of Education\, this session is suitable for those studying the following: KS3 History; GCSE History Edexcel: Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-1939; GCSE History OCR: Germany 1925-1955: The People and The State. DESCRIPTION:This map indicates the number of Jews murdered by the Einsatzgruppen (killing squads that followed the German army) in each country. The map shows modern-day Belarus\, at the bottom\, then continuing clockwise\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, Estonia and Russia. The map was featured as part of the Stahlecker report and was used in the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. SUMMARY:Virtual Student Talk: The Day of 'Liberation'
DESCRIPTION:Former women inmates of Bergen-Belsen after liberation\, April 1945. Wiener Holocaust Library Collections.  \nAs the German Army started to lose the war\, they were pushed into retreat towards Germany by the Allies. The Allies then began to liberate the hundreds of camps that the Nazis had constructed across occupied Europe. \nFor many prisoners\, liberation was only the beginning of their journey to freedom. \nThis talk\, aimed at GCSE and A-Level students\, will utilise sources from the Library’s unique archive to examine the topic of ‘liberation’.
