Using The Wiener Holocaust Library’s unique archival material on correspondence to discuss the mechanics of communication between separated families during the Nazi era and the Holocaust, Dr Christine Schmidt (Deputy Director and Head of Research) and Dr Barbara Warnock (Senior Curator and Head of Education) will explore how stamps and stationary were vital for survival during the Nazi era and the Holocaust.

Virtual Student Revision: Democracy and Nazism – The Nazi Dictatorship

This revision session, aimed at GCSE and A-Level students, will utilise sources from the Library’s unique archive to examine the Nazi Dictatorship. It will explore the idea of ‘the Terror State’; the role of the SS and Gestapo; opposition to the Nazis; Nazi propaganda and the extent of totalitarianism in Germany.

Virtual Student Revision: Democracy and Nazism – The Racial State

This revision session, aimed at GCSE and A-Level students, will utilise sources from the Library’s unique archive to examine the Nazi’s creation of a ‘Racial State’. It will explore the radicalisation of the state; Nazi racial ideology; increasing antisemitic policies and actions as well as the treatment of Jews in the early years of war by looking at the development of ghettos and deportations.

Using data from a new pre-/post-treatment survey of ~3600 North American teenagers, Dr Lerner argues that mandated Holocaust education interventions not only increase factual knowledge and decrease Holocaust denial in general, but that they also correspond with an increased likelihood that students will take necessary action to protect minority communities when confronted with hatred or intolerance.
