Short Description
A memoir written by a British political prisoner from Guernsey about his experience in Landsberg am Lech, a subcamp of Dachau.
Text Description

K.G. Bailey was a policeman in Guernsey at the time of the occupation of the island. Together with fellow policeman, Frank Tuck, he did all the could to annoy the Germans. They cut telephone wires, put sand in the petrol tanks of German cars, and painted V for victory signs around the island. Eventually the two men were caught breaking into German food stores.

Bailey was sentenced to two years and eight months hard labour, spending time in various European camps before being taken to Dachau in December 1944. Released in 1945, this memoir was published two years later.

During the German occupation of the Channel Islands many thousands of people were persecuted, including slave labourers, political prisoners and Jews. Visit our online exhibition, On British Soil: Victims of Nazi Persection in the Channel Islands to find out more.
