Ronald (Ronnie) Roberts was born in Wiesbaden to a white German mother and a British/Barbadian father. He experienced racist persecution at the hands of the Nazis during the 1930s and was interned as a British national in German camps during the Second World War. He developed these cocktail recipes whilst interned.
After the war he worked as an interpreter in various DP camps in Austria before embarking on a career as a cocktail waiter. Ronnie's Bar became one of the most popular spots amongst the Viennese night clubbing public.
