This house contract for the purchase of the first Jewish house outside of the ghetto in Prague is the oldest item in our collection, dating from 1774.
Wolf Zappert had a successful business as a jeweller in Prague and was a well-known philanthropist who wrote to the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in the 1780s and asked permission to establish a house outside of the Jewish ghetto in order to conduct his business more efficiently. The Emperor agreed and Wolf Zappert became the first Jew to live outside the Prague ghetto.
