Text Description
This house contract for the purchase of the first Jewish house outside of the ghetto in Prague is the oldest item in our collection, dating from 1774. Wolf Zappert had a successful business as a jeweller in Prague and was a well-known philanthropist who wrote to the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in the 1780s and asked permission to establish a house outside of the Jewish ghetto in order to conduct his business more efficiently. The Emperor agreed and Wolf Zappert became the first Jew to live outside the Prague ghetto.
