Short Description
Anonymous hate mail received by the Neumann family around the time of their British naturalisation in 1947.
Text Description

The Neumann family received this anonymous hate mail around the time of their naturalisation in 1947. The author complains that British taxpayers’ money was being used to look after “scum from Europe.” It ends, “Everyone hates you. Go to Palestine.”

Ludwig Neumann was a German Jewish businessman who had owned an industrial clothing company before being forced to sell his factory in 1938. Following the sale, he was interned in Dachau and released on the understanding that he would leave the country immediately. Neumann therefore travelled to Great Britain where he was briefly interned as an enemy alien. Following his release however, he served as an anti-aircraft gunner for the British.
