Periodicals

The Wiener Holocaust Library holds an extensive periodical collection with particular strengths on the Holocaust and other genocides, the fascist and anti-fascist press, Jewish studies, Jewish life in Great Britain and abroad, and the Nazi era. The collection reflects the multilingual nature of these subjects and includes titles in over fifteen languages and ranges from the late-19^th century to the present day.

The collection is constantly growing and consists of two streams: (a) historical periodicals and (b) current subscriptions (print & digital). Together they contain over 3200 titles of journals, newspapers, magazines, bulletins, and more. Of these titles, 1,339 are on microfilm or microfiche. There are over 80 active subscriptions which fluctuate yearly. In-person browsing of these print titles is possible on the Reading Room’s open shelves, as well as digitally via the R-drive on the Reading Room PCs.

Please note: the print and microfilm and microfiche periodical collections are kept in the bookstore; they therefore must be requested via call slips available at the reading room desk. Some print periodicals are kept offsite, so please check the catalogue record and request a delivery via the reading room desk or by contacting the library email before your visit.

Select historical periodicals are digitised and can be consulted on the Reading Room PCs. These must be reserved by contacting the library email address. A number of current academic journals and periodical archives are also available on the Reading Room PCs via their publisher’s websites. Document Delivery Services are available for periodicals as long as requests adhere to copyright limitations (one chapter or article, or up to 5% of a book, whichever is greater).

From the search results, click on the “Serials” tab to narrow the search to periodicals.

Periodical Searching Top-Tip:

In Advanced Search, filter your by content type “Serials”.

Then use the “Additional Fields” drop-down menu to narrow your search by over 100 different identifiers.

Particularly useful fields for periodicals may include “ISSN,” “Publisher,” “Language,” and “Period Keyword”. The latter lists the decades we hold of a particular title.

The indices of select periodicals are now digitised and available via their catalogue records as PDFs.
